I know this will start a large debate (at least it looks like it might),
but I have to ask why does "the answer certainly must be *NO*"? I
agree that most repeater QSOs could be used on simplex at lower power,
and thus, technically, they are breaking the law. But, how does this
make it so each ham does not have a right to have his own repeater?
I would say they probably do have the right, but that exercising it is
not in the best interests of the ham community at large. I see nothing
in Part 97 to say every ham *can't* have his (or her) own repeater.
Please enlighten me and the group on your thinking.

SYNOPSIS OF ACTIVITY
--------------------
Solar activity was very low. Region 7776 (S08E56) produced
a few subflares. The largest was a B6/SF at 04/0605Z. Region
7773 (S08E07) has simplified somewhat. It remains the largest
Region on the disk but has been relatively quiet.
Solar activity forecast: solar activity is expected to be
low. C-flares are possible. There is an outside chance of an
M-class flare in either Region 7773 or 7776.
The geomagnetic field was quiet.
Geophysical activity forecast: the geomagnetic field is
expected to become active by the end of the three-day forecast
period due to a coronal hole.
Event probabilities 05 sep-07 sep

Class X 01/01/01

HF propagation conditions were near-normal over all
regions today. A gradual deterioration in propagation is
expected over the next 72 hours, beginning first over the high
latitude regions and then working equatorward over time. Minor
signal degradation is expected to accompany this activity,
particularly on transauroral night-crossing circuits. Increased
levels of fading, periods of enhanced absorption, and greater
multipathing is expected. MUFs may also deteriorate slightly
during this unsettled period.

A couple of years ago I started a thread complaining about the low cost

(slammed is a better word) I came to the conclusion that due to the size
of the market (600 to 700 thousand hams) the high prices are justified.
If the market was the size of the computer markets you would see me

Steve,
I have been using an ICOM IC737 for about six months now as my only HF
rig. I am delighted! The receiver is very good indeed and I have
also received consistently good reports about my audio quality etc. I
run the rig barefoot into a Cushcraft R5 vertical antenna and I am
really impressed! After I installed it my first QSO was with
VP8CPC in the Falkland Islands and I have since worked all over the place.
I have been sucessful getting through some DX pileups mainly (I believe)
due to the excellent speech compressor - although technique helps!.
I like the keyer and use it all the time for CW with a Kent paddle. I
use the ICOM SP8 desk mic although the supplied fist mike is also very
good.
What would I change? I would like to see an RF gain control and I would
also like to have some kind of deviation control for FM but apart from
that I think it's great! I didn't bother with the IC737A 'cos I would
never use VOX anyway. I did buy the external speaker as the little one
built-in IS a little tinny. I also invested in an ICOM Xtal filter for
CW.
I also use the rig for digital communications and built a cable to attach
between the 8 pin DIN on the back and my KAM Plus TNC. No problems on
RTTY, AMTOR, PACTOR or HF-Packet. If you want to control the rig from a PC
don't spend money on the ICOM level converter ... buy one of Ramsey
Electronics cables for $50 and use that - it's what I did!
There was a review of the iC737 in one of QST / CQ or 73 earlier this
year if you need a different view.
In short, *I* like it but have nothing to compare it with as it replaced
some very old Sommerkamp separates! It's easy to use and very intuitive
to operate. The manual is clear but you won't need to look at it too
often.
Hope this helps! 73 de

How do you know you have suffered little to no radiation? You certainly
don't feel it or taste it or smell it. And what works for you might not
work for others: There are some people who have smoked several packs
of cigarettes per day for most their lives yet for some unknown reason
never develope cancer - but that's certainly not an argument *for* smoking.
Recall the true story I posted on here a while back concerning a ham
who worked on a 2M amp with the cover open for a couple hours - the
next morning he woke up blind. He said while working on the amp
he felt *nothing* - no heat, no pain, no discomfort. This story
was originally passed over the QRP email group from an M.D.
conducting research on the subject.
It's the cummulative exposure one should be concerned about.

I would buy the TH79A over the Icom. In my opinion Kenwood radios are built
better than Icoms, and they seem to have better audio quality. However, Icom
builds smaller radios than Kenwood. The 79A also has a more friendly interface.

Will the mod change things so that the entire frequency can be keyed in

386/25 side-by-side and that was simply I put them each on
separate house circuits. That did pay off..but, not everybody
has two 120V AC circuits side-by-side. I did, fortunately, hi.
My computerguy tells me there are specially-available, hurky
RF shielded cabinents available..some even second-hand. The
downside is he never looked very hard and so I still have the
same old cabinent.
BTW, regarding the aluminum foil, my computerguy #2 sez there
should be no problem with a 386 and covering miscellaneous holes
in the computer cabinent; however, he cautions covering too much
with the 486 because of the chip's greater cooling and air flow
requirements. GL!

Is KDK what replaced Santec? I have an old Santec handheld, and have been
wondering how to get ahold of Santec. Someone told me they had changed
names and moved to Plano, TX, but the directory assistance operator there
couldn't find the name I had been given.

If the UK will grant licenses without testing to US Amateur Extra Class
licensees, this does not mean the FCC will do the opposite. SOmeone
could ask the FCC, but I don't think it will.
